I.S.M. University formerly known as Indian School of mines, Dhanbad was set up by the Government of India and formally inaugurated by his Excellency, the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin on December 9, 1926. The institute is situated in the heart of the country’s prime coking coal belt, 260 kms from Kolkata with a fully residential campus spread over 88 hectares and boasting of world class facilities. The University is directly under the financial and administrative control of MHRD, Govt. of India.
To keep abreast with the technological challenges and societal aspirations, the academic profile of the institute has evolved over time. What started as an institution to impart mining education has graduated into a full-fledged technical institution of international acclaim, offering a host of undergraduate and post-graduate courses. The admissions to the four and five year programs are through the prestigious IIT-JEE examination.
From a humble beginning with 20 students, the university has now grown into a family of over 2000 students. Active involvement in Research & Development, Industrial Consultancy and Testing along with a strong academic structure has been the forte of the institute. This has enabled the university to make immense contributions to the nation’s progress over the last 82 years.
