
The N.S.S unit of I.S.M University has celebrated International Literacy Week 2008(Theme: Literacy-power to change the world) during Sept. 8-14, 2008.
Before the inauguration of this ceremony Dr. Vikas Mahto, N.S.S Coordinator discussed the importance of literacy with Praveen Kumar N.S.S Secretary, K.D.Pani, Assistant General Secretary and other N.S.S volunteers and campaigned these issues among the people by a rally through posters and banners. N.S.S volunteers have visited many slum areas for health and education survey. Shri P.S.Sandhu, Registrar, I.S.M University have inaugurated the celebration of International Literacy week. He has advised the student to realize their duties towards the society and use their brain to find out a better solution for the basic problems of the common people. This is followed by the speech of Dr. Vikas Mahto. He has mainly focussed the importance of literacy and told that literacy alone can alone eradicate major social problems in India. After tat all volunteers took the pledge by Dr. Vikas Mahto to work sincerely for the welfare of the nation.
In this week many events/competitions /programmes like drawings, posters, essay writing, poster writing, debates, dance, songs,skits, Video film shows etc are organized by this unit and topics are related to the importance of literacy and their role in the development of our society. Many students from different schools and I.S.M. campus have participated in different events. On the closing ceremony of this International Literacy week Professor R.Venugopal, Dean(R&D), Prof. P.N. Singh Chief guest and Shri Ratan Mahawar, District Superintendent of Education, Dhanbad have provided valuable message to students which will help in spreading literacy in our society.
